Fun Times in Cyberspace : "Stuff on my Mouse" (Week of July 7, 2008)

Wow. All diverting and intentionally humorous sarcasm aside, this really is some crazy science....but remember kids, this kind of morally-gray fun belongs in the laboratory and is not for backyard experimentation.

So....it all started with this link to a story about growing heart valves from stem cells (harvested from the recipient). [I also check the UK's Times Online Science page and the US's Live Science website daily - I read recently that British citizens tend to be more aware of developments in modern science because they have better science websites...no, seriously.]

Amazing - things grown in a laboratory that are actually functional! Unlike that ear-shaped cartilage mass they grew on that poor Vacanti mouse about a decade back....remember this little guy? [Also note, you can grow an ear on your forearm too, not just on your mouse].

Now you're thinking, "Gee, I wonder what else you can do with rodents?" Well, so glad you asked. It turns out, you can make them glow in the dark - and cats too, I hear - and you can make them produce sperm for your infertile partner. But not only can do you do TO things them, you can do things WITH them. Scientists have borrowed the acute olfactory sense from rats and given it to yeast, making for a highly accurate aerosol poison detection system. Crazy!
